“On board the Panacea, I keep an ongoing daily journal to record tidbits, make illustrations and observations throughout our cruise. These visual recordings not only illustrate our travels, but they also provide escape for me. Painting allows me to be wherever my subject is, focused completely on that particular reality."

Ms. McCrea has painted since childhood. She became a professional artist in 1971, selling artwork on a national basis under the name Wood-N-Peg Creations. In 1990, she was given the rare opportunity to combine her love of painting and her sailing skills in a full-time life adventure. She joined Peter McCrea aboard his 32’ sailboat Panacea for an extended ten-month cruise to the Caribbean. They were married on the island of Antigua. Because watercolors were so ideally suited to that romantic aqueous environment, Ms. McCrea set aside her familiar oil paints and delved into her new medium. The luminosity and spontaneity of the transparent watercolors allowed her to capture the atmospheric moods of the sea with a drama unattainable by any other medium. While most of Ms. McCrea’s works are images seen when sailing, she also paints landscapes, rural scenes and figures. There is always a story behind each work, and this “pictorial journalizing” has become her trademark. Ms. McCrea and her husband have sailed all over the world, including a three-month “Downeast” expedition. They now make their home in Thomaston, Maine, where Margaret continues to paint marine scenes on board, never tiring of the rugged beauty of the Maine coast.
