I was born in Melrose, Massachusetts of Swedish heritage, and
grew up on the North Shore of Boston. I began my life as a full
time artist in the early eighties, living in a cabin in Vermont,
always painting what I loved, landscapes and old houses and
barns. My passion for the New England coast inspired me to eventually
purchase my own sailboat, a 33 foot Luders, which I sailed on
the Maine coast and eventually down the Eastern Seaboard to
Florida and across the gulf stream to the Bahamas. There I lived
for a few months on my sloop "Seascape," earning my
way by painting boats and marine scenes.
I have come to rely on a core of collectors rather than focusing
my energies on pursuing large-scale art-business endeavors.
I avoid trendy scenes or formula painting. I am drawn to the
scenes I paint by the light, and by disappearing Americana.
I now live in a 250-year old farmhouse on the Eastern Shore
of Maryland, where my wife and I enjoy the abundance of wildlife
on our 11-acre farm, and canoeing on the Chesapeake Bay and
its tributary rivers and inlets.
I have a deep love for workboats such as ply the waters of
the Chesapeake, the Maine coast, and the Gloucester schooners
of yester-year, as well as classic sailing yachts. I am a stand-up
studio painter, and work plein-air during the summer on our
sojourns to Maine and Nova Scotia, seeking new material. My
work is available through the Art of the Sea gallery in South
Thomaston, Me.
