Find out more about nautical art!

Jeffrey Sabol grew up near Connecticut’s Housatonic River, where boating and drawing were part of everyday life. From an early age, he was fascinated by the ever-changing reflections of the boats at anchor in the harbor at the mouth of the river. This fascination is dramatically translated into his unique interpretation of line and shadow, which appear almost abstract in his startlingly realistic work. His paintings portray a great tranquility and a gentle motion with an exquisite lightness of line.

Mr. Sabol studied architectural design and drafting. He began traveling extensively, and then settled in the Florida Keys during the winter months. Here he worked as a commercial fisherman, long-lining and shrimping in the Gulf of Mexico. His experience of living at sea for up to a month afforded him first-hand knowledge of the sea’s many moods, and it is a constant theme throughout his work. His serene sailboats, usually at anchor, are often painted
in a soft, fogbound setting, and he is a master at luring the viewer into the quiet beauty of these lovely hidden corners of New England. During the summer season, he spends his time sailing to many of the islands off the New England coast, dropping anchor at night in one of the picturesque harbors.

In addition to being an accomplished fine artist, Mr. Sabol is also widely known for his murals and trompe l’oeil effects. He learned the art of mural painting when he was privileged to study for a year and a half with the world-renowned muralist and portrait artist W. Linzee Prescott of New York. Together they painted 12 murals on the International Swimming Hall of Fame to commemorate the 1976 Bicentennial in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Mr. Sabol is frequently commissioned to paint yacht portraits and murals in homes, in addition to painting masterful marine works in acrylic, for which he has won numerous awards. His paintings have reached a wide audience and are eagerly sought by collectors — his latest works usually sell out at exhibit openings.
