Born in Boston in 1954, Michael B. Karas showed artistic
promise at an early age. He went on to study at the New England
School of Art and Design.
He and his wife Fern traveled extensively throughout America,
and then returned to New England and settled in the quaint little
village of Sandy Point, Maine, overlooking Penobscot Bay. There
they lovingly restored a 200-year-old farmhouse, and converted
the attached barn into a studio where Mr. Karas continues to
paint today.
Living on the coast of Maine affords Mr. Karas an endless
supply of subject matter and inspiration. His bold, powerful
works masterfully express the many moods of the sea. Rich in
color and sensitivity, his expressive landscapes depict dramatic
rural and wilderness scenes. His love of the outdoors is clearly
evident in his paintings, bringing the viewer face to face with
nature. His use of the many qualities of light is sometimes
dramatic, sometimes subtle, but always accurate and hauntingly
beautiful.
Mr. Karas is an avid salt-water fly fisherman, and always
has his fly rod nearby. He believes that observation of nature
is a key element in creating a painting, and his time spent
fishing allows him the perfect opportunity to observe it closely.
Mr. Karas has been painting professionally for over 26 years.
He has had 27 one-man shows, and has participated in countless
group exhibits throughout the United States. He has received
numerous awards for his work, and his paintings are featured
in numerous private, public and corporate collections throughout
the world.
