Brad Betts paints a variety of landscape scenes from Maine
seascapes, farm life, fishing and sailing, to historical maritime
scenes. His favorite subject is capturing the shadows, light,
and colors that are created when waves meet Maine's dramatic
shoreline. His paintings reflect his deep appreciation for the
works of many fine artists, including Edward Hopper and the
nautical scenes of Donald Demers, Christopher Blossom, David
Thimgan and Thomas Hoyne.
His inspiration to paint the ocean comes from growing up around
the water, deep sea fishing and sailing. Today, he spends much
of his time with his wife and two sons on the Maine coastline,
gathering new material to use in his next painting. Brad has
been an artist for over 15 years and received his education
from the University of Maine in Orono. He comes from a long
line of artists that includes his father and grandparents. He
has studied under Carolyn Blish and Donald Demers and is a member
of ASMA, the American Society of Marine Artists. Although most
of his time is spent painting, he is also completing his teaching
certification and is currently a substitute teacher.
He has sold his paintings and prints internationally and has
been featured in many shows in Maine. He paints from his home
in New Gloucester, Maine but loves the challenge of painting
on location. "There is nothing like sitting in front of
a Maine scene and painting it, when you hear the sounds of waves
and birds and you smell the sea you truly get to be a part of
the painting." Brad hopes to give his viewers a sense that
they too are a part of his scenes.
