Nestled amongst the pines on the Quinebaug River in the historic
milltown valley of Southbridge, Ma., N.E. artist Rex Stewart
utilizes the trees to produce his 'signature' sculptures. Primarily
diversified - self taught artist, Stewart's concepts are coined
by his ability to thoroughly research a project and apply his
findings to a block of wood which he sculpts with intimacy.
This process, unmistakably establishes Mr. Stewart as the only
living artist in America specializing in this genre of work.
In many of his works, which almost exist as motion picture
stills from various adventure or suspense movies, Stewart's
point of perspective for viewing the event is from behind the
subject. This devise, incorporated in his award-winning gun
decks and dramatic fishing scenes, heightens the feeling of
intensity and depth, making the viewer feel as if they are entering
the scene, firsthand.
In his signature pieces, Mr. Stewart seems comfortable and
at ease with all his menageries of subject matter. Whether steamboat
models, shadowbox sculptures or dioramas, all are carefully
researched and produced with an amazing penchant for detail.
Today, a "Who's Who" Silver Anniversary recipient
and a nationally exhibited artist with international acclaim,
Stewart has been on the maritime circuit for 30 years. He has
given lectures and demonstrations about his work which appeared
in numerous periodicals, magazines and books including television
appearances and one documentary. His work is part of many private
and corporate collections both in the United States and abroad,
including those countries of England, France, Thailand and Italy.
Also to his credit are an extensive line of museums including
South Street Seaport in New York, Naval Historical Spaces in
Washington, D.C., The Albany Institute of History and Art in
Albany, NY and Ships of the Sea Museum in Savannah, GA.
