Chicago-born James Griffith's interest in art goes back to his early childhood when he spent much time drawing and painting. During his high school years, he spent summers taking classes at the Chicago Art Institute and at the American Academy of Art. He then went on to Amherst College where he earned a BFA in studio art, and finally, to the Los Angeles Art Center College of Design, graduating with a degree in illustration. Mr. Griffiths began his career as a commercial illustrator, but soon decided to devote his time to marine painting, as he had been interested in painting ships and the sea for many years.

Over the years, he acquired an extensive library of nautical books, magazines, photographs, and ships' plans that he uses for research and accuracy of detail in the ships he paints. Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Griffiths' work is the fluid realism of the sea. He is a master of depicting the ocean in its many moods.

Mr. Griffiths has several commissions for the United States Navy and for the U.S. Postal Service, for which he did a series of five paintings that were printed as postage stamps. He has exhibited in nautical galleries across the country, and his work is in many private and corporate collections
